CAPE SHIRREFF, ANTARTICA

The U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Program studies how much krill live near the South Shetland Islands each year. In 2023, the program began building 4 new structures to replace the aging and now high-maintenance field camp built in 2016.

With quality and longevity in mind, they chose Schafer Metals to supply the exterior stainless steel and corrugated panels.

Materials proven to last

Survival at the Bottom of the World

Schafer Metals expertly curates and designs solutions that can exceed their customers' needs - even if that means surviving the harsh year-round conditions of Antarctica.

Researchers were spending 30% of their time maintaining the old wood-built and rotting structure on the left (below). The new stainless steel structure on the right (below) will now allow researchers to put their full focus towards important scientific discoveries for decades to come.
